Wherefor Vice?

By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot

Vice is a wonderful word. It has connotations that it really does not merit. In its' most strict terms, a vice is evil or deeply immoral and, to be blunt, not many people exhibit symptoms of that nature.

In our modern world we have demoted vice to the realms of bad habits or unacceptable behaviour - but even then, we are too civilised to agree as to what constitutes either of those aspects of an activity.

For many, smoking, taking drugs or indulging in sex outside of a 'couple' style relationship are all vices. None of them are compulsory and none of them is actually so detrimental to the survival of the community that they should be banned.

The odd thing is that those who decry these 'vices' are often also those who have either never indulged or have indulged and given them up.

Hypocrits and converts.

For myself, I find hypocrisy the biggest and most telling vice of all. The world is full of hypocrits and we all know at least five of them. They say things like:-

"Homosexuality should be banned" but they do not speak from knowledge, they speak from the ignorance generated by rumour and dirty minds.

"Some of my best friends are black" but they would not want them to live right next door or marry their daughter.

"It shouldn't be allowed" but don't do anything to prevent "it", preferring for someone else to take on that responsibility.

"Don't be so stupid" because the 'stupid' person is running rings around them in a debate or discussion.

"I gave at the office" because it makes them sound charitable even though they are lying through their teeth.

Do I have a vice?

Thankfully, yes. Lots of them.

Vice, after all, is the spice of life.

Yeah, Arthur, vice is indeed the spice of life. Ya gotta have something...

And I also agree that hypocrisy is one of the worst traits of humanity. I try to avoid it engaging in it, although I know that I surely fall victim to doing it at times. But that is one of the things that I hate most of all. We probably all do it at times without even realizing it...

Jim

Thank you for this thought generating intel on hypocrisy, Arthur.
We probably all have a vice, some of which we hide and others, we try to enjoy in a controled manner, without harm to others.
Best wishes.
Frederick

Thanks, Arthur. You missed one: Often, those who scream the loudest against something are those who are secretly indulging in it. Their screaming puts everyone off the trail. Here in the U.S. the man who started the Family Research Council and who has worked to "deprogram" homosexuals, was caught in Europe with his gay lover.

A vice is also a tool that is very useful in the workshop as a third hand! That's a useful vice.
You are correct when you say that hypocrisy is probably the worst of our vices, we all are at some time hypocritical and self righteous.
