Wherefor God?
By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot
There are quite a few established researchers (Herbert von Danniken and Zecharia Sitchin immediately spring to mind) who make very good cases for the idea that God, as seen on Earth, was actually an extra-terrestrial being. Early Sumerian texts, which pre-date the Bible by many centuries, certainly provide a wealth of tantalising snippets of information to make the argument almost irrelevant. Bearing in mind that everything in the Bible is subject to the mood, beliefs, whims and veracity of those who translated it, should we be so ready to dismiss this idea? If you think about what mankind has become, a voracious, self destructive and infestive medium to all aspects of the natural world, don't you also have to accept that this is exactly what would have happened to any life form created by exrta-terrestrials to mine minerals and then abandoned to its own devices? Allow anything to breed out of control and you create a massive over population that will destroy the environment in which it exists. It is not unfair to compare the behaviour of mankind to that of a virus or parasite. Both of these will predate upon a victim until the victim dies - bringing about their own deaths in the process. Hasn't mankind destroyed so much of its own habitat as to make itself responsible for, as a very simple example that Americans can accept, the great dust bowls that were created by the destruction of trees and hedgerows to facilitate the use of armies of combine harvesters? For most of life on Earth there are factors that limit their growth and expansion. A fish, for example, will not grow too large for its tank or pond and grazing animals will be culled by meat eating predators to keep numbers down and remove weak or malformed specimens. Mankind has no such strictures - it reproduces with no regard for the consequences. If the Sumerian writings are to be accepted, the question has to be asked about where God actually fits in to the great scheme of things. Did He create the extra terrestrials and give them the message to spread His word on an interplanetary level? Were the early extra-terrestrials really missionaries? Just as many greedy people claiming a religious calling have sullied and perverted the pure message of Jesus, is it not possible that the same sort of extra-terrestrial individuals have done exactly the same with the message their own messiah delivered? "Wherefor God?" I ask myself. It requires an enormous amount of blind faith to accept that God always was and always will be - with neither beginning nor end - and even more faith when I look around me at the state of mankind today. My God is a jealous and violent God - I simply do not see that He would accept the state of mankind today as anything less that His self-condemnation for a job ill performed. |

Maybe all that we have is blind faith, Arthur. One can't really believe, that "this life" is all there is. Thank you for sharing. Best to you. Frederick
