When will the USA learn?

By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot

The USA Senate Foreign Relations Committee is currently meeting and discussing the release of Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, the only convicted Lockerbie bomber.

Just when will the USA learn that it cannot continually interfere in the affairs of other sovereign governments? I realise that the cowardly, fawning association of administrators of the UK will do absolutely anything to receive a pat on the back from any USA lackey but it really is time for the USA to butt out!

Scotland has an elected autonomous government that is trusted to run the country. This autonomous government, in its informed wisdom, decided that it was cruel and inhuman punishment to keep a dying man in prison.

The USA has absolutely no right to question this decision nor to hold an enquiry. It can express disatisfaction with the action but that is the end of it.

The USA is now becoming one of the most meddlesome and dangerously ignorant nations in the world. The concept of international affairs is as foreign to the USA administration as is the right of the staff of an army commander to make disparraging comments about people who neither know nor understand the pressures under which he works.

Obama can't even keep control and rationality in racial questions at home and certainly seems to have a great knack for putting his foot in his mouth.

The UK is not perfect. Scotland is not perfect.

Both countries are sovereign states and decisions that they make are nothing to do with the USA administration. The bare faced effrontery in requesting senior government members to attend at some penny ante enquiry illustrates such a massive contempt that I am stunned that refusals were given.

Real men would have simply ignored and treated the requests with the contempt that they so richly deserved.

Can you imagine if they'd 'invited' senior politicians from Russia or even more friendly places like France or Germany to go and explain themselves to the enquiry? Somehow the words "go jump" come to mind.

Ahh. You forget the special relationship between the USA and UK - that of master and poodle.

One day the UK will have grown up politicians again.

U.S. citizens were killed on the airplane that monster blew up. We have a vested interest in the protection of our citizens.

Like it or not.

That does not give you the right to challenge any decisions made by an autonomous government.

I agree that USA always gets rubber-stamped by UK but at the moment we are not holding enquiries about USA involvement in threats against Iran, naval exercises around Korea or the escalation of deaths in Afghanistan - all of which could affect the welfare of Europe and the UK. We are not even enquiring into the sanity of firing a competent commander simply because he hurt some feelings in Washington.

There are many decisions made by Washington that impact unhappily on European lives but we live with them because we accept USA autonomy.
