UFOs, really?
By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot
If ever an acronym was made to be abused, U.F.O. is it. From the very basic and lunatic "You foe, me pal" to the crass and basically stupid "There is no such thing as an unidentified flying object", UFOs create an air of what ever the narator wants to create. Why is this? Quite simply, it is because the nomenclature "unidentified flying object" has become irreretrievably linked to flying saucers, space ships and any other extra terrestrial form of conveyance. The sheer joy of having something that is capable of producing fear, elation, incredulity or simple disdain cannot be dismissed. We are almost at the stage where one man's flying saucer is another man's hub cap. Are there such things as UFOs? Of course there are! There will be very few days in anybody's life when they will not see something flying through the air but which they will not be able to identify. Often the unidentified flying object will only be seen peripherally, merely being an impression on those retinal cells that are divorced from the point of interogative direct vision. For example, a ball thrown through the air could very well be mistaken for a bird, a low flying aeroplane or a frisbee. If a specific identity cannot be applied, voila, you have a UFO. An unidentified flying object! As photography and image manipulation advance, the creation of realistic looking pictures of flying objects that bear resemblances to popularly accepted flying saucer configurations will become even more convincing. With a very long history, UFOs have a remarkable, common feature, they never seem to land anywhere. Despite being quite prepared to be seen from the ground while flying through our atmosphere, they never seem to land in areas of pedestrian concentrations. It may be simply because our atmosphere is such a soup of contamination in terms of suspended forms of biological life and the results of gross mechanical processes - more likely, I believe, it is because there are no UFOs that carry inteligent/alien life forms. We are too far away from anywhere for regular extra terrestrial visitors. Even if there had been any, they would have made contact (read Contact with the Gods by von Daniken) or would have decided that Earth was not going to be profitable. One thing that we do know from our own history - if ever extra terrestrials do arrive in UFOs and if they have any of the propensities of humanity, the first thing they will do is eliminate the natives - US! |
