Two bibles in your life?

By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot

Do you have two (or even more) bibles in your life?

The Holy Bible has been a great source of put-downs ever since it was launched in the everyday language of the people who were able to read it. As memorising great sections of the Bible became a standard teaching model, the general reasoning level of readers was reduced to - "that's not what it says in the Bible so it can't be true". The ability to quote chapter and verse became the equivalent of the board of censors because it was definitely not acceptable that you should actually think about what you had learned in order to understand it. (For heavens sake, there are even Bibles that tell you what to think!)

In the arena of self improvement and internet marketing I see more and more evidence that people are thinking less for themselves and relying more upon quotations from the written works of others in order to hi-jack or even end any open discussions.

Ancient tomes are trotted out as containing the wisdom of the ages even though they relate to a time when the basic premises were being developed and the general dynamic of life and society had not been changed by the many pivotal events since the author put pen to paper.

Behind the current trend is a very disturbing process that seems to be drawing the ability to think independently from those who would and preventing it from developing in those who could.

Discussions are no longer used as avenues of exploration for improving or germinating new ideas and processes. Discussiona seem to have become the seed bed for accusations of dissension and thought crime. No longer is it possible to have peer to peer debates because it is inevitable that someone will introduce Quack Macey's book, 'Toilet Paper for the Masses' and trot out an out of context line or two or simply expect that the remaining thinkers will crumble before this brilliant tactic and accept that 'thinking for yourself' is a pointless, futile exercise.

Books are sources of inspiration. They provide a foundation upon which you can build your own ideology and belief system. There is not a single book written by man that you should accept at face value because you are not that man, you do not live in the same circumstances and you are probably more or less inteligent than he was. Once you sacrifice your own thought processes on the altar of a false prophet, you make less of yourself. As a child you learn by experience. Even though your parents will tell you something is hot, it is in your nature to test it (those of you with children will know this). The blind faith acceptance of the opinions and words of others denies your own curiosity. It also denies others the possibility of a debate that could be mutually enlightening.

How many bibles do you have in your life?

Contributor's Note

I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them and of their children after them.
I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.
