Totally self centred!
By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot
For the past fifteen years I have tried to understand what people were talking about when they talked about 'being positive'. I have read a lot of books, listened to a lot of audio presentations and watched a few videos (yeeucchh!) and I am left with only one conclusion. Being positive means being totally self centred. It means that, as far as you are concerned, nothing else in your vicinity is going to interfere in any way with the way you have decided to behave. You are going to be so damned positive that you will watch a man die rather than allow any possibility of what you consider to be 'negative' waves to be acknowledged (after all, if you are truly 'positive' he won't be able to die, will he?). Everything I have read or heard about being positive has also been about a new religion - GREED. To be positive means to ignore anything that does not fit into your plan or into your conception of where you live or where you think you are going. "Do not let the negative waves of other people impinge upon your psyche!" shriek the hysterical teachers. Concentrate upon your plans and maintain your positive attitude against the challenges that are created by reality. Be so positive that the idea of anybody suffering is so outlandish that all you can do is ignore it. What a sad, sad philosophy! Although I do not accept the idea that anybody can actually be negative, I deplore the idea that being positive means that the pain and suffering of those around you must be treated as some sort of atmospheric interference. Forget being positive. Being positive is all about ME! Being human is all about US! Forget being negative. FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY - BE HUMAN!!!!! Humanity is a fragile and multi faceted form of existence. To be human is to suffer all the frailties, strengths, joys and sorrows to which mankind is subject. Don't believe that you can opt out of some aspects of being human - that way lies inhumanity. |

You're right of course, about the "being human" part and about the greed angle. For me (and I suspect I'm not alone on this) being positive merely means not letting myself be deterred by the negative influences of people who will tell me that I can't do something merely because it's difficult. To live more fully, one has to pursue one's dreams. Of course you have to watch out for other people. The ideal dream to pursue is one that gives value to others in addition to personal gain. Not all feel that way, but many of us do.

I agree with you to some extent but I do not remember any literature or address on 'being positive' that did not accept that your only aim was to be positive for the sake of your own benefit. Since it is not possible to directly influence the people by whom you are surrounded and since no works on the subject raise the point, the only possible conclusion that can be drawn is the one I have reluctantly had to accept. Being positive equates to ignoring anybody and anything that does not 'fit the plan' - it equates to a degree of selfishness that is both destructive and ugly. It is a self generated God complex.
