Today's demonstrations

By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot

Every day there are some wonderful demonstrations of how to prove that you are a right plonker.

Today's plonkers are Tony Blair and Nottingham police.

Tony Blair, probably one of the most detested and self seeking people on the face of the Earth has announced that he is going to donate the proceeds of his memoirs to a sports centre for wounded soldiers. Certainly the millions will be welcomed by the Royal British Legion but why couldn't he just make the donation and keep his mouth shut?

In truth, Tony Blair cannot resist anything that will help to salvage his reputation but this gift is not the great gift that it appears to be. The sort of money that, for whatever warped reason, Tony Blair is earning will mean that this 'gift' will actually cost him very little. What a great pity that he should trumpet about something that should be a private penance for creating the wounded soldiers he says he is trying to help.

The Nottingham police saw Graeme Swann driving his Porsche in an area where there had been some burglaries and decided to pull him over. Mr Swann duly stiopped and left his car carrying with him some screw drivers that he had bought from a local store to rescue his cat from under the floor boards. Apparently it had been trapped there, accidentally, by some workmen.

Despite Mr Swann's explanation, the police decided that he was driving while drunk and arrested him, even though the story about the cat was confirmed in a telephone call to Mr Swann's wife. One police officer claimed that she had to wind down the car windows because Mr Swann smalled so strongly of alcohol. She also claimed the Mr Swann's voice was slurred.

A blood test showed that Mr Swann was indeed over the drink driving limit. His blood test revealed 83mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood - this is a massive 3mg over the limit.

I agree that if you should not allow any lee way in penalties but, I have to wonder why these police officers considered that Mr Swann was drunk. Anybody who has 80mg of alocohol to 100ml of blood is hardly going to be staggering around - indeed, most people would show no signs of intoxication at all.

Mr Swann, if we are to believe the police version, was slurred of speech and stank of alcohol so badly that a car window had to be opened. The police have a hard enough time maintaining their image with the public so is arresting someone for driving a Porsche going to improve matters?

Mr Swann, a member of the English cricket team, will now have the threat of a legal sanction hanging over him until his case comes to court on 7th October.

Two demonstrations that they aren't all locked up.

I don't think many people are fooled by Blair's "gesture." As for Swann, from what you say he was only just over the limit. Having said that, many road safety groups would consider that the alcohol limit is set too high anyway, and it needs cutting by half, if not reducing down to zero. I have some sympathy for him, but if he'd caused an accident and injured or killed someone at that time I'm sure I'd feel very different.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

It is an interesting fact that more deaths on the road are caused by sober drivers - 0mg per 100ml of blood.

I think Swann was arrested for driving a Porsche and the statements by the police officer were ill founded and thoughtless - trying to justify the unjustifiable.
