The History of the World
By Arthur Webster of My Local Gazette
When mankind was in its infancy there was no problem deciding what to do. The choices were hunt, eat, reproduce and rest - simple - and each activity could be indulged in each day. Life was not easy but it was a natural life that could be borne with equanimity. The stresses were limited to survival - everything else was an adjunct to that. Then man began to think. He became self aware and, at the same time, became aware of his mortality. The fear of death, from being a subconcious level of knowledge that simply governed the risks he would take, became a driving dread. The dread lead him to religion. Aware man had a need to feel that his death was not just inevitable but that it also lead on to something better. The very first religion was probably a simple acceptance that nature (Mother Nature or Guaia) ruled everything. The observatiuon of the way dead things slowly returned to the earth probably gave rise to the idea that man would return to the earth and be reborn. The first comfort blanket had been created. The 'spiritual' life probably gave rise to milenia of peaceful coexistence between the random groups or tribes of humanity until the religious leaders and the tribal leaders formed an acquisitive aliance. Throughout history the results of this unholy alliance have been seen over and over again. Tribes making war on tribes for land, property or captives. The captives were especially sought after when mankind learned how to farm. Based on the morality ruling at the time, the conquests were often seen to be almost benign since there was not the wholesale slaughter that became acceptable when the era of 'civilised man' dawned. It was enough to beat the enemy and leave what was not wanted behind. Spiritual leaders at some point decided that they were 'on to a good thing' and created gods of various natures. These gods were greedy and vengeful and needed to be pacified by the granting of gifts. The greedy church had been born. It has been a characteristic af virtually all of the religions of the last 30 or 40 milenia to demand sacrifices or gifts for the gods. By manipulating the population, who were terrified by what they were told would happen to them when they died, the religious became wealthy beyond all reason. Today we are paying the price for the ancient religious practices. We have churches that are phenomenally wealthy still demanding that the very poorest of their congregation make sacrifices to the will of whatever god they espouse. Most wars that have been fought in modern history have been fought for the acquisition of 'more' and almost invariably 'in the name of god'. History of the past 2,000 years is rife with slaughter and plunder as a direct result of the continuing unholy alliance between churches and rulers. The insanity of two or more nations fighting in the cause of the same god does not seem to filter down to those who have the power to wage war. There is one lesson that history teaches us - mankind does not learn from its mistakes. |
