Should have been a bank!
By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot
As my health continues to deteriorate and the state of my eye sight prevents me from doing much work, I find myself once again in the position of not being able to eat. I have managed to obtain enough dog food so that my dogs will not go hungry. That is one worry I can forget about for the moment. One of the wonders of nature has come to my aid. It is my fifth day without food and the hunger pangs have disappeared. This is, apparently, quite normal and I am very grateful. It distresses me that my bank is charging me 66% interest on my monthly loan repayment. These are being made 10 days late because my small state income arrives at that time. They call this interest a 'fixed charge' but it translates into a rate that Shylock would be proud of. One thing my present situation has taught me is that the financial situation that many people find themselves in is aggravated and engineered by the banks. How can people possibly be expected to recover if the banks are exploiting their illness, unemployment or other inability to provide for themselves? Standing charges have not only ensured that I am hungry again, they are deliberately designed to make sure I stay that way. Shouldn't banks be heavily taxed on their income from usury? They are providing me with no additional service, they are being involved in no additional costs and the extra interest is on top of what I am already paying! Hey. Ho. At least nature is being helpful. I should have been a bank! |
