Sexy?
By Arthur Webster of My Local Gazette
There was a time when the term sexy almost exclusively related to a member of the feminine gender. Ladies clothes were said to be sexy or to enhance her air of sexuality - indicating that they made her more attractive to the male gender. Like so many words, 'sexy' has become redefined in useage and, in the process has become much reduced in effect. Nowadays 'sexy' can be used as an adjective when the speaker runs out of or cannot think of a more fitting superlative. Now it is quite usual for a piece of machinery that works uniquely to be described as 'sexy'. The most mundane of objects can be made to sound more desireable by the addition of the word 'sexy' somewhere in the nomenclature. Strangely, as permissiveness has advanced, sexiness has been redefined when it does apply to women. It does me good to see young men ogling a well dressed woman and ignoring naked or semi-naked females nearby. The beaches of Spain are often populated by very scantily clad women but it is the ones who are fully dressed who now seem to be 'sexy'. Maybe the 'flash of an ankle' will return as the height of erotic symbolism? Who knows? Maybe the pendulum will swing back? |

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Arthur. It would be nice if we could return to neat, clean, well dressed and polite as definitions of sexy. Keep up the good work. Frederick
How very true, Arthur. Over the years the English language has changed so much, often for the worse.
