seo, traffic and bovine excretion
By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot
There are three HOT topics being pushed by the internet sharketing crowd. S.E.O. or search engine optimisation Traffic generation Bovine excretion We have all seen the hundreds (thousands?) of emails each week promoting methods of performing search engine optimisation. The major profit producing sector appears to be selling the Google number 1 spot. As I have said in a response to another intel, getting to number 1 on Google is easy. All you need to do is use a stupid word or word combination and you will get there. I proved this by using the keyword uppitytowntraders. It is still number 1 on Google after ten months (I had to rebuild the site ten months ago, it had been number 1 for two years before that). I also reached number one with 'red and yellow spotted paint' but I see that others are now simply sticking that phrase into their keywords to get the number 1 spot. It is this finessing of the system that so many "offline gurus" teach to those stupid enough to buy a bill of goods. It is this arrant nonsense that has left many small businesses a lot poorer and a lot less trusting of the IM crowd. S.E.O. requires hard work if it is to be done effectively. There are many shades of black and grey hat methods available for purchase (or even free) that claim to make S.E.O. an automatic process but none of them really work. Why do you suppose that is? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that thousands of wannabe marketers are being given exactly the same information (look at most traffic generators and you will find that there is little to choose between them) and they will, therefor, be carrying out exactly the same exercises. They will be building their lists of hundreds or thousands of keywords and trying to optimise for as many of them as possible. There aren't enough hours in the day and those with similar products will be competing against each other with exactly the same resources. Search engine optimisation is a gamble. You are betting that people searching for your product will use a certain search term. If nobody searches for any of the terms that you are optimised for (or if all the traffic has been bought over your head), your S.E.O. has been a waste of time. Traffic should flow from S.E.O. but those of you who have tried it will know that because your S.E.O. is of pretty poor quality, your traffic will not grow. There is only one quick way to get traffic - buy it! 97% of wannabe marketers fail - not because they are no good but because the gurus have a vested interest in ensuring that they do not succeed so that they can sell the next, latest, greatest product. If you have just bought the Traffic Goolie Grabber for $47, the chances are that so have thousands of other people like you. (Let's face it, can you really resist a hundred, thirty foot long sales letters a week?.) Welcome to the world of superfluity. You are using the same software (how often that is really only an ebook) as everybody else so you have a built in failure factor. If you think I am being harsh, ask yourself why, when you bought the Traffic Goolie Grabber, which was supposed to solve your traffic problems at the click of a mouse (it's always 'at the click of a mouse'), the bonuses included other products that were supposed to solve your traffic problems at the click of a mouse. I can't be the only one that thinks this picture is wonky. Bovine excretion oozes out of sales page after sales page and video after video when the person trying to sell you the latest, greatest programme asks you if you are 'sick of being told lies by other gurus trying to sell you the latest, greatest programme'. "Of course you are," they say "which is why I am making this latest, greatest programme available at a price everybody can afford". What they are really doing is sugesting, subliminally, that when you discover that this latest, greatest programme doesn't make a blind bit of difference, you won't be a cheapskate and ask for your money back. Of course, they also rely upon their 'famous 60 day guarantee' to help you to forget to claim. Mobile phones seem to be the next hot topic. Thankfully, many mobile suppliers in Europe are already looking at ways to eliminate this form of spam. Some people find it difficult enough to simply make a mobile phone call without the networks being clogged with even more bovine excretion.

Contributor's Note
If you disagree with any of my conclusions, be prepared to be able to defend your position. I don't care how many copies of the Traffic Goolie Grabber you have sold - I want to know how many users have benefited. When I have challenged sharketers in the past, the only people they could refer me to as having had some success were actually selling the Traffic Goolie Grabber - not using it.

Hiya, While I agree with much of what you say, I feel I have to point out that the people actually 'selling' are the same people who are reaching the buyers. I have my site at the top of the search engines too - sometimes at the top of millions of pages and I thought, 'boy was I doing well'. But then I realized that my search term, 'mind and soul evolution' was not being search for! Zero searches in fact. Which of course is why you could get your phases on top, too, as you point out. The secret of course is one of being at the top with search terms that others are searching for. I don't agree that paying for that is the answer either, for search terms that a lot of people are searching for, cost more than most of us can afford or are prepared to pay. As your wise old head says, there is no easy answer. We all want to get to the top, but it far from being an easy thing to do - even if you are selling a point and click formula to get there. I think studying the methods of the people who do get there, and are actually selling, is the only way to do it - regardless of what they are selling. Or perhaps, as usual, I'm just being naive?

Hi, Tom, If 'guru A' launches 'programme A', he does not need to have an optimised web site - only lots of affiliates who will promote everything he sells. If 'guru A' sells 100,000 copies of 'programme A' at $47, he will be able to claim a sales figure of $4,700,000. If 'guru A' gives his affiliates 75% commission, he has actually made a net profit of $1,175,000 with NO seo and NO traffic. Most of the big selling gurus have been around for years and have massive lists of affiliates. Get the picture?
You seam to know more about SEO then me so can you tell me why my website http://www.dog-first-aid-101.com is #1 on Google for the key words DOG First Aid? I'm not a vet. I'm just a guy that has a passion for Dogs. I don't pay for traffic and I don't use any fancy program so why is my site #1?

Hi, Bill, When I looked, your site was #2 behind www.peteducation.com. One reason your web site is highly rated by Google is that the web title is the key word. This is often a very good start for long term S.E.O. I don't know how quickly you got to #1 but, after over five years you have accumulated 4,715 inbound links. This indicates that the value of your site has impressed many other web masters and (possibly) contributors. Many of these inbound links are to high PR sites - Google is impressed! Your site appears to be in the top 4% of all web sites and has 352 Google indexed pages. The position of your web site simply illustrates the long term nature of successful S.E.O.
Five stars from me, Arthur. Don't think I need say more! LOL Take care Jean

Thanks Jean, This has pushed my over-all rating to 3.5 stars. Obviously not everybody agrees with the topic let alone the presentation or content of the intel. I must try harder!
I like bovine excretion, Arthur! It has a basic use, to make the garden grow. My mistake---that's the real stuff!! The stuff you speak of comes from the other end of these sharksters. Great intel, Arthur and many words from the wise! Thank you for sharing. Best to you. Frederick

Hi, Peter, Bill Coughlin's site is as good a promotor of SEO through content as any I have seen. None of my sites seek popularity but they are found because of the topics I write about.

Thank you Balaji, What is the point of optimising for a keyword nobody searches for? If the keyword is searched for, thousands of sites will try to optimise for it but there is only one number one spot.
