Our parents would not believe or understand

My life has been a long and interesting one during which I have seen scientific fiction turned into fact and every task made much simpler. At the same time I have watched in dumb shock as I have seen the children of our nations become strangers to discipline and learning. One thing all children once knew was the position of the line that they should not cross. Discipline wasn't just a word in the dictionary but a two edged sword that shaped our characters. One edge was imposed discipline - the other was self discipline. In the parlance of the parents of today, imposed discipline was an enforced system of control that induced fear and used corporal punishment to beat any individuality out of us. What do we have today? We have parents for whom the very thought of discipline invokes a vision of effort which they would rather not make. Their children are allowed to run wild because limp wristed experts are prepared to denounce a strict parent as a child beater and to remonstrate with that parent while the wayward child listens, watches and smirks. Children are rebellious by nature and a parent's natural response is a short sharp lesson. Watch how any animal parent treats their young. They nurture and cherish them and waste no time in correcting them when they do something that they should not do. Humans are no different. Human parents know, instinctively, that an incorrect behaviour pattern must be nipped in the bud. Nothing works better than a sharp smack around the rear end. I am reminded of a young lady who was remonstrating with a mother who had just smacked her child for running into a busy road without looking. I can still see her shocked face as the mother turned on her and screamed at her "When you have a child of your own you can let it play in the street - I want my child to live to be an adult!" |

I let my 2 children know if they have any ideas of calling authorities, go ahead and do it. The authorities will come and I get to remain in my home and they do not. Good luck, toss a coin. It may be better it may be worse. Do you feel lucky?
