My dogs
By Arthur Webster
I am owned by two dogs, a Cairn Terrier and a Perro Pastor Catalan (Spanish Sheep Dog). Originally in the white and pale gold colour range, this pair of hairy bosses only revert to their true colours when they are subjected to their twice yearly shearing. Scamp, the perro pastor, has been with me since she was a tiny puppy and we have grown old together over the last 11 years. She has always been an affectionate dog but, since I am not exactly robust, having her hurl her 27 kilos at me is quite an ordeal. As she has aged, she has slowed down but even being leaned on by a 27 kilo dog is quite hard. She feels it is her duty to bark at anything that she doesn't understand and to grumble under her breath when I decide that enough is enough. We have a comfortable relationship, she is happy to lie around near me while I am happy to have her lying around. Although not trained for it, she has an instictive knowledge of when I need to be cared for - which is quite often. Chap, the Cairn Terrier is a lively little fellow, about 14 years old. He came from a rescue centre about 20 months ago and, I suppose, it was fate that an old man was looking for an older dog to replace a beloved Podenco who had died a few months prior. He is very vocal, at times, and has a cataract in his right eye. It could probably be removed but it is stressful and he seems to get around very well even if he does walk into things occasionally. He became attached to me immediately and is a great joy. One amusing characteristc is that he will not eat a biscuit unless he puts it on the floor and I 'try' to take it from him. For a litle dog, his growls are quite something. He has got me well trained - so well that it is not unusual for me to sit and feed him his dried food one piece at a time. I know my home is never clean because of two shedding monsters but I don't care. What I get from these two animals is unconditional love and companionship in return for a little food and a walk every so often. I've got a real bargain!

Thats what we all look for is that unconditional love thing. Seems with a dog you just can't lose.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Hi, Merlor, Unconditional love and a longer life - you are right, with a dog you can't lose. Older people tend to be more sedentary but with a dog, even an old dog, to walk at least twice a day, that is not an option and will keep the blood circulating longer.
