Marketing the wrong way

By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot

I don't have a lot of time for the vast majority of people who claim to be 'internet marketers' - far too many of them are bottom feeders of the worst kind.

Since I have included my health problems in my personal profiles so that people can understand something of the way I think and why I occasionally vanish offline, I have been inundated with spam emails offering:-

1 - A totally natural, guaranteed (lovely word - means nothing!) cure for cancer
and
2 - A totally natural system to guarantee perfect vision.

The people sending these emails have taken to heart the gurus instruction to 'find a desperate market' and have then tried to sell that desperate market the very worst sort of snake oil contaminated with arsenic.

There are far too many people offering 'cures' online and there really should be some sort of regulation to stop it. Here, in Spain, you cannot sell any sort of drug or health food (legally) without being qualified in the area of medicine that you are providing advice about.

Before anybody says 'Oh, but I sell Acme Wonder Pills because my Granny swears by them', that does not qualify you to recommend them to someone else who might be adversely affected by them - either financially or healthwise.

I recently applied for a home work job with a very well known health food company (I didn't know this when I applied). I explained that because of my condition, there was no point in committing myself to a monthly autoship of product in order to be able to become an agent.

Considering that I have had 40+ years of very intensive health care and product trials, I was flabbergasted to receive an email telling me that "You are obviously deficient in many of the vitamins and minerals that you need and you really should give these products a trial. It will only be €xx.xx per month and I know they will cure most of your problems".

This person is a door to door salesman for the company. This person has no medical training and did not even know what some of my problems are (the names were totally foreign) and yet this person is allowed to go out and peddle useless trash on false promises and deception.

Those of you who are students of psychology will know that once you get your first monthly shipment into a person, flatter the blue blazes about how much better they are looking and then say "You feel a lot better, don't you?" while nodding your head, you have a new monthly recurring income.

Sickening, isn't it?

The internet has grown so fast, that regulation attempts are hopelessly behind. I agree about these on-line predators -- I get the same kind of stuff. It's almost like you have to get burned by these people (even several times) before you learn. Some of us never quite learn.

There are people out there who will steal your identity.

There are people out there who will plant viruses on your computer just because they can.

There are shysters out there who will try to sell you anything and everything just because they are allowed to do so by the system.

I agree it stinks, and it's not right... but... what's the answer?

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Probably the answer can be as simple as being able to track back offensive and dangerous material and disconnect the source.

The technology is available and those who behave in a lawful and responsible manner would have nothing to fear but, I suppose we have to remember that stopping these scum bags from operating is infringing upon their human rights to stomp all over OUR human rights.

The nice part about these advertising health cures is that we can click them away, and not clutter our landfills.
It's not the answer, Arthur, but it is an answer.
Thank you for sharing.
Best wishes.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

You are right, of course, Frederick, but until fairly recently I was dealing with the results of desperate people believing the claims and putting their lives at risk.

Healthy people will click away because they are healthy - sick people will be robbed and put in harm's way because they are sick and know no better in their desperation.
