Luck - or lack of it
By Arthur Webster of My Local Gazette
There has been a great move to try to influence the way people think about luck and the world in which they live. I am very saddened by the cynical exploitation of people in need by such crass offerings as surround the (so called) law of attraction. It is a very lucky person indeed who can sit in the lotus position and manifest untold wealth from a benificent universe that is not even aware that he/she exists. Luck is something that is not in unlimited supply. Many people go through their lives and do not realise how lucky they are. They do not realise that the good luck that they enjoy is being bought for them by the bad luck that other people suffer. Good luck charms and spells do not influence how lucky people will be. What governs the amount of good luck available to be shared among all of those who need it is the number of people who are strong enough to take the burden of the bad luck that otherwise would have been theirs. My luck throughout my 63 years has never been good. I had to grow up, when I was four years old, to be the guardian of my parents, at age eleven I contracted the cancer that still rules my life, I have had major surgery, far too many deaths in my immediate family and now find myself going blind. Do I feel victimised by luck? Not at all. Naturally I would have appreciated a bit of good luck but I have come to realise that by being strong enough to bear the pain and burden of an endless stream of bad luck, I am actually enabling others, weaker than myself, to enjoy a less stressful life. I see myself almost as a bad luck conductor. So many people bemoan their ill-luck but, believe me, they are still lucky - it is just that they do not appreciate their value to the population at large. Without us, the bad luck would have to be shared among other, weaker individuals and the world would be an even sadder place. I am grateful that my strength and fortitude has enabled me to bear the burden of so many people - even more so when I realise that, through it all, I have been happy.
