Kids

By Arthur Webster of Marketing With Art

Life is such a strange thing but one aspect of it does puzzle me.

When do we stop being children - in the strict sense of the word? Like puppies, and I may have said this before, little boys never grow up. Maturity is not something that I aspire to because there is much more fun to be had and life is so much simpler if I simply remain my father's child - his kid.

As far as I am aware, none of my eleven children ever opted out of being my child. Even those that died are still my children.

Is it all about age? Do our kids cease to be our kids simply because a few new calendars have been bought and used?

Put me with any of my fourteen grandchildren and I defy anyone to tell who is the oldest or more mature with their eyes closed. Like all men, I am just a big kid. I love to go out with my dogs in the pouring rain. Stomping through muddy puddles is a delight. Turning over rocks and fallen tree trunks is like entering an Aladin's cave of wonders and mystery. Even lying in the grass and watching the pictures in the clouds brings me tremendous pleasure.

My kids will be my kids, as far as I am concerned, until the day I die as I was my father's kid to him to the day he died.

Like many artificial measures, age destroys many people. I am so glad I live in an age when 'old' people no longer feel constrained to 'act their age'. I well remember the old ladies shuffling around when I was a small child. Growing old seemed such a terrible thing in those days. Now I am old, much older than I ever expected to be, my mind still sees me as a kid.

We are, all of us, someone's kids.

I'm right there with you. I think it's the Peter Pan syndrome

Peter Pan? He had it easy - the lost boys, they too. Captain Hook - now there is a sad case, blaming the crocodile for his jealousy.

For myself, I don't mind acknowledging age - I just don't bow down to it.

I share your thinking on this one. Just the other day, I saw an elderly man riding along on his electric wheel chair, with a big smile on his face and I remember thinking that this man, no matter how old he is, is someone's child. I tried to picture how his parents might have felt on the day that he was born.

I applaud the way you enjoy life. That's the way to do it...by keeping your "child's eye" outlook on life-full of wonder and enjoying things such as walking in the rain. Contrarily, I've seen kids acting like elderly people.Who hasn't. But when an older person acts like a kid, people talk. Well, let 'em. They're probably jealous that this person is enjoying life and they don't know how to enjoy life.

Those are two of my grandchildren in the picture - that structure they are on went through many transmogrifications - so many that none of us could really remember what it was supposed to be in the world of groan ups (well, many do!).

Some good points, Arthur. Why do we HAVE to retire at a certain age, why CAN`T we learn to use a computer even though never taught at school. Age certainly brings some benefits, but to a large extent it`s up to ourselves how old we feel.

Never let anybody tell you what you HAVE to do in your private existence. I would rather die a happy fool, doing what I want to do (as long as nobody else suffered as a result) than a happy(?) adult doing what everybody else expected me to do.
Maybe some of my neighbours will club together and build me a memorial - they will probably inscribe it 'gone - and not before time!'
Some of the kids around here, because I have a black lens in my glasses, really think that I am a pirate - and who am I to tell them differently?
Incidentally, I have found that most six or seven year olds can work any of my electronicals - and they don't even need the instruction manual!

I think, for what it's worth, that we can all benefit by "suffering" at least a touch of PPS (Peter Pan Syndrome - never wanting to grow up).

A touch? A TOUCH????

Oh no my friend, we guys should wallow in it! After all, what possible benefit does 'being' old confer except the ability to recognise that age is relative. My physical age just doesn't bear any relationship to my mental age.

Like you, Arthur, I can relate to being a kid and I enjoy teasing the grand children and telling stories that make their minds work in wonderment. Such as "How could you watch TV, if you didn't have electricity?"
Thank you for the memories.
Best wishes.
Frederick
