I must be really scarey!
By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot
I must be a really scarey person or the people invited to comment, answer or grade my literary gems are cowards - I'm not sure which. A recent intel about the low ratings given to another intel generated a fair bit of interest and yet I see this sort of thing all over the internet. Nobody can accuse me of not saying what I mean in words which most people can understand. Prevarication is not one of my strong points and, even if I have no strong opinions one way or another, I will espouse a particular direction in order to encourage agreement, disagreement or simple argumentative discussions. What do I find? I find that if people do not agree with me, rather than say so, they will simply rate my article lowly. How sad that a piece of written work should be judged on the degree of complacency rather than the use of language and the way points are made and transmitted. I must be scarey because few internet marketing theory masters will engage me in discussion but it is obvious from the many organisations to which I submit my ideas, they are quite happy to broadcast their ignorance by marking me down for what I believe rather than for the way I write it. The internet is surreptitiously creating a race of cowards that is unable to debate, argue or even be objective about some subjects. Instead of the wider dissemination of knowledge leading to greater intelligence and self assuredness, it seems to be leading to a race of mental midgets. How very sad. The day is not far away when an initial post will be followed up by 600 others with sparkly pictures and those dreadful words "Ooh, lovely!" |

One of the problems I've found in my brief time here is that the criticism boxes for intels are limited. There is nothing for "tone", "goes on too long" etc. Also, Qondio might consider stressing that the review should be on the quality of the writing, not whether you agree with it.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I don't think that Qondio can do more than they do. I'm afraid the problem is one of general low self esteem among readers. If they feel that they cannot agree but are unale to present a counter opinion, they simply mark down.
Rating is subjective. If I disagree with the content and the writing is poor I will rate low, I may even bother to leave a comment. If I agree with the content and the writing is poor I will rate low. If the argument is good, even if I disagree I will rate high, It's the presentation of the argument that grabs my attention. If you are trying to spread crap, religion, politics or spam, well I disagree and you will be rated low.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
That is how it should be. Unfortunately, it isn't.
