How does God speak to you?

By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot

Until I could see my end rapidly approaching it never occured to me that I was being addressed by the Almighty.

Throughout my life I have always felt that there was a reason for every ill that befell me. No matter how painful an event might be, I always felt that there was something good to come out of it. The presence of Guardian Angels has been apparent to me for many years. Strangely, I did not associate these angels with God. They seemed to be very Earth bound and not particularly divine.

The first time that I was really aware that God did speak to me was about three years ago when I was walking my dogs in a lovely part of the Spanish countryside. My sight was good in those days but, even so, I was very fortunate to see a rather large toad that had managed to get itself coated with the red sand that featured in the area. The sand had absorbed a lot of the moisture from the toad and it was in a very sad condition. I was very upset by the toad's condition and washed it off with the water I carried for my dogs. Unfortunately I could see that I had only delayed the inevitable because as soon as the toad was released it started to move about and get covered in the sand again.

I remember saying to the toad (I have a habit of talking to strange animals) "If God is in His Heaven and all is right with the world I should be shown where there is water for you". I couldn't simply leave the toad so I picked it up, used the last of the dogs' water to wash it off again and started walking, carrying it on the flat of my hand.

The area I was walking in was very familiar to me but as I passed one particular place I heard a loud droning noise. This was sufficiently strange for me to notice (I often go into a trance like state when walking). It became a bit of a nuisance because the noise was destroying the peace and quiet. I decided to find out what was causing the noise and went off to investigate.

It was bees!

I had never seen the bee hives in the area before and was very surprised - I was even more surprised to see that the bees had a small pond that was fed by a fresh water supply from a float operated valve. As I put the toad into the pond the bees stopped their droning and the area became quiet again.

God was, indeed, in His Heaven and all was right with the world.

I have noticed several events which I can see could have been God talking to me and the wisdom of hindsight has enabled my much improved long term memory to bring to mind events that can only have been designed to inform me. I can't say that God and I have a personal relationship but I have noticed that when my doubts are strong or my fears even stronger, something will come along and show me that God is speaking to me.

Yes - it often surpries people. I'm a sucker for snails and worms that get caught out in the open after rain. The sun in Spain kills them very quickly so I often spend half an hour or more on a rescue mission.

We often strain to hear God's voice, and many of also pray for signs and wonders as displayed in the Bible.

But God very often speaks to us through other people (Or creatures). And His signs and wonders are all around us, if we just bother to look.

As my blind father used to say - 'It isn't the looking, it's the seeing!' - not bad from a man who had never looked or seen in his life.

Thank you for the article, for the sharing your life with us. I enjoyed the added image too. "I was that toad!" gave me a good shake.
After the reading, I wanted to leave the hot Thank you to you. You enabled me to look around more attentively - to see myself through the eyes of my environment - prompted me to examine my response to God's care and love and thus healed me from my blindness that threaten to afflict us if we will allow ourselves to live carelessly regarding nest to us.
I bookmarked your article and thanks once again for the awakening though reading your confession.

Thanks, Thomas,
The toad survived in the bee's pond for two years and then was either eaten by a Heron or found somewhere else to live.
I have never heard the bees since that day I rescued the toad except for a gentle humming when I am very close to the hives.
