Gimme a gun!
By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot
I have never claimed to understand people who resort to violence but a foot in the mouth blunder by a fawning UK prime minister has me wondering at the things you hear when you haven't got a gun. David Cameron, the prime minister of the UK, has gone on record as stating that the British army was the junior partner in 1940 when we were fighting the nazi threat to Europe. Just how ignorant does a man have to be before someone questions his capacity to occupy one of the chairs at the top table? How can any British person even think that the country was ever the junior partner at any time in that war? In 1940, America was still a neutral power and supplying goods to both sides! Doesn't he know that the only support the British army had in 1940 was from some very determined local groups of militia and resistance fighters? Doesn't he know that 1940 saw Britain standing alone against the threat of the anihilation of democracy across the whole of Europe and Africa? I'm not a violent man but to see the leader of the UK being so desperate to suck up to the USA that he would deeply offend and tragically belittle the sacrifices made by British troops and civilians does make me wonder if I am wrong. This super-gaffe certainly would explain the call "Gimme a gun! Let me shoot the S. O. B.!" Maybe we should have wider gun ownership in the UK so that such ignorance would, at least, be tempered by a little thought before being displayed to the world at large. Take Cameron off the world stage, give him a rifle and send him to Afghanistan. Let him learn the power of the gun and the danger of stupidity in the face of predators.

Contributor's Note
I would be interested in the reaction if Obama had said something similar about the American troops who died after they joined the fight, late in 1941.

He probably meant that the UK is now a junior partner to the US. On that he'd be right. It's the US who will dictate how many British troops are sent to Afghanistan and Iraq, and when those British troops will leave. Of course they let Britain's politicians think that isn't the case, but most know it is.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I might agree that his total inability to form sentences and cogent phrases could give some support to your supposition - unfortunately he was VERY specific in the date that he chose to use. As for being a junior partner now, a partner, even a junior one, has some say in what goes on - when it comes to gunboat diplomacy, the UK has been reduced to the position of a rubber stamp.
