Get this church organised!!!!!

By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot

With all the problems that beset the Catholic Church at the moment, is it really so disorganised as to shoot itself in the foot?

With major charges against the priesthood of sexual predation upon the children placed in its care or in contact with its' priests, can it really afford to excommunicate a nun who is described as "saintly and courageous".

Sr. Margaret McBride of St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix Arizona has been excommunicated within a very few weeks of agreeing to an abortion that was necessary to save the life of a 27 year old suffering from pulmonary hypertension.

There is no doubt that Sr. Margaret went through all seven stages of Hell in her prayers and deliberations before agreeing with the doctors that an abortion was the only way to save the mother's life.

The local Bishop, Thomas (although he apparently had no room for doubt) Holmestead decided that the penalty for saving this mother's life was excommunication!

What!!!

Here was a valuable and highly respected bride of Christ and this numbnut bishop, within a few weeks of her (to him) sin, has managed to arrange a divorce for her and banned her from receiving the sacraments! Just what is happening within this shambles of a church?

Priests and bishops who have been found guilty of wick-dipping of the most heinous sort are still priests and bishops. "Investigations" are still going on into events that apparently took place decades ago. So, how can this brave and devout nun be so pilloried within a few weeks of saving a life? How can this bishop be able to take upon himself the destruction and negation of a life committed and dedicated to the worship of God and the welfare of others? How dare he come between a Husband and one of His wives? What does he think that the wedding ring worn by every nun symbolises?

The bishop defended his decision by saying that an unborn baby is not a disease and that the end does not justify the means. In other words, from his lofty position at the top of the parochial Christmas tree, it is better to lose two lives than to sacrifice one (unviable) life to save one.

I am very much anti-abortion but I do accept that there are times when the fate of a baby has to be weighed against the survival of the mother. More often than not, nature (God?) will impose an abortion on an unhealthy mother but sometimes the God given ability to terminate life must be exercised in order to save it.

Somebody needs to grab the Catholic Church by the throat and shake it till all the hypocrits, sodomites, heathens and non-believers fall out. It needs a fit and healthy wordly organiser to produce a faith that we can all accept and believe in. The complex and self serving forms of christianity that abound today are the result of the failure of the organised church to spread the word of God. It is time that all the faiths got together and sorted themselves out. Most faiths are monotheistic but can they all, honestly, be sure that the God they worship is the true God?

It's about time the church accepted that it is a BUSINESS and that it should be run on business lines.

The local Phoenix authorities should certainly be investigating a massive abuse of power and the shocking treatment of an employee.

Get this church organised!

Contributor's Note

For those who wish to quote the sanctity of all human life, was the mothers' life not human? As for the Bible, nowhere is the sacrifice of a life for a life denounced, didn't Jesus sacrifice his life for all of ours?

Well said Arthur. That whole scenario makes no sense to me as you stated it. It seems to me that in any "legal" situation, there's the law and there's the spirit of the law.

I personally am against free-for-all abortion, but sometimes you have to choose between the lesser of two evils. You don't want to kill an unborn child, but why allow both of them to die on a "technicality"...?

And then there's that deal with the pedophile priests...

There ain't none of us in this world who is perfect, but I can't see that this is what Jesus would have wanted for His bride (His church).

Unfortunately this bishop is just a bit more proof that some churches are more interested in 'what's in it for them' than in evangelising.

The lack of Christian charity and understanding displayed by this creature combined with his 'holier than thou' attitude is symptomatic of a church in decline.

Great intel, Arthur. Did you see the play or movie, "Doubt?" The title really says it all. Those who have no doubts are scary indeed.

Hi, Larry,

It seems that the only doubts this bishop had were whether he should act without consulting Rome. A parochial dictatorship is still a dictatorship even if the dictator wears a frock (errr . . . does that make him a transvestitie?)

I think the Catholic Church is doing a fine job of destroying itself without any outside help.

It certainly looks that way. This bishop had obviously not learned anything in the seminary and, from the looks of it, has even forgotten that!

I have it on good authority that the RC priests do not learn what the Bible says in their training to become ministers .. they learn dogma. I am not for abortions but would think there would have to be more leniency/love shown in this instance.

Hi, Lorraine,

There are far too many 'articles of faith' - things that have to be accepted because the church says so.

Transmogrification is certainly something that takes a massive amount of faith.

My first wife had two brothers who belonged to the Franciscan order. One tried hard to be devout but found that the road of faith was hard on his feet. The other was a more worldly although more religious person but found his calling in languages. He spoke 17 fluently (I have no idea how many dialects) and was fully rewarded in his life by his joy in teaching others.

I did note that both had pavlovian reflexes relating to their calling - not exactly comforting for a seeker of truth.
