Drugs

One of the worst things that many parents dread to hear about their children is that they are 'on drugs'. Looking around me, I don't see that many parents setting a very good example in order to persuade their children that drugs are bad things. One of the most abused drugs around is nicotine. Not only is this widely 'enjoyed', it is widely advertised, easily available and socially acceptable despite much propaganda against it. Then we have alcohol. This isn't so widely abused but we still see the evidence, all too often, of the results of over indulgence in another drug that is readily available, widely advertised and socially acceptable. The 'morning after' abortion pill is becoming more and more seen as an acceptable alternative to contraception. Young girls are able to obtain the pill at school clinics and doctors surgeries simply by asking. The rules of self respect and self restraint are being re-written if not totally deleted. Until we can get away from the hipocricy of so-called 'soft' drugs, I don't see how we can possibly hope to influence the behaviour of our children. |
