Creation Or Simply Material Of Sorts

By Arthur Webster of Ask Old Coot

C.O.S.M.O.S.
Creation or simply material of sorts?

From the perspective of the miniscule planet on which we live, the cosmos is too big to be comprehended.

While there are many explanations that have been given for the existence of the universe ranging from divine creation to the most tremendous accident, we don't even know what we mean by 'the cosmos'.

If we look at the relatively crowded universe in which our own small galaxy exists and realise that it is being constantly revised from the point of view of how big it is, why should we not look beyond it to discover other universes, equally enormous, spread throughout the available vacuum of space?

Do we dare to think that if the size of the universe as we know it could be mapped so that six inches represents the total extent of the universe, we would not need to create a map ten miles square to record all (or a small percentage) of the universes? How do we know that the cosmos is not made up of as many universes as our universe is made up of stars?

Infinity is a huge concept that no human mind can encompass but, if space is truly infinite and an object travelling in a straight line would never have an end to its journey, what else could exist in the vast area available?

Is it so unlikely that the whole of infinite space is populated by countless 'big bang' events creating universes as numerous as the grains of sand in a desert?

Put it another way, why should our universe be the only one?

Well there's a lot of talk going on right now about parallel and alternate universes. The cosmos is wondrous indeed...

There is a big difference between another universe and a parallel or alternative universe.

Another universe will occupy its own unique area of space while alternate of parallel universes will co-exist in the same space.

That's what they say...

They say too much and impart too little!

Thanks for writing. Makes our petty problems truly petty.
