Ancestors
By Arthur Webster of Costa Classified Ads
Ancestors - the old precursers. Normally, if we discuss ancesters we are looking at people about whom we know very little and who have been dead for no short time. (It would be interesting to know when a dead relative qualifies as an ancestor.) As with all things historical, distance lends beauty, mystery and style. Who does not know of Robin Hood and who is aware of how many people claim descent from him? Robin Hood is a revered historical figure but recent discoveries of contemporary writing would tend to give the lie to his being loved by the good because of his philanthropic ways. How many people in Cornwall claim to be the descendants of pirates and cut-throats to whom the years have added a charisma that they never had in life and surely don't deserve in death. IN the future, if mankind does not destroy itself, when we, living today, are referred to as 'ancestors', just think how much information we will leave behind for our successors to discover about us. Not only have we recorded popular fiction onto media that will survive the milenia, our very lives from cradle to grave are also there for all to discover. Just imagine, in five hundred years time someone researching their family tree will not only be able to find your exact time and place of birth but just about any remarkable thing that you might ever have done. Your blogs on line, your parking tickets, how much electricity you used, how much money you had and what you spent it on and anything else committed to a record. As ancestors, we ordinary souls will not be so remarkable. Nobody will want to claim descent from 'ordinary' people but they won't be able to lie about it either. |
